On the occasion of Mahavir Jayanti, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several top leaders extended their greetings and paid tribute to the 24th Jain Tirthankara, Lord Mahavir, highlighting his timeless message of non-violence, truth, and compassion.
Taking to social media, PM Modi stated, “We all bow to Bhagwan Mahavir, who always emphasised non-violence, truth and compassion. His ideals give strength to countless people all around the world.” He also acknowledged the Jain community’s efforts in preserving and popularising Mahavir’s teachings and affirmed that the Union government would continue to work towards realising his vision.
Modi also recalled last year’s government decision to grant Prakrit the status of a Classical Language — a move widely appreciated by the Jain community.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah emphasized the timeless relevance of Mahavir’s teachings. “The messages of truth, non-violence, compassion and social harmony given by Lord Mahavir Ji will continue to guide human society for eternity,” he wrote.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh echoed similar sentiments, saying, “His ideals continue to inspire us to build a just, peaceful and inclusive society.”
BJP National President JP Nadda called Lord Mahavir an “eternal symbol of sacrifice, penance and peace,” and stated that his divine teachings would always remain relevant for fostering a non-violent society.
Mahavir Jayanti, celebrated this year on April 10, marks the birth anniversary of Lord Mahavir, born in 615 BC as ‘Vardhamana’ into a royal family. The day is a significant festival for the Jain community and serves as a reminder of Mahavir’s core teachings—particularly the principle of Ahimsa Parmo Dharma or non-violence being the highest form of religious duty.
The festival is not just a celebration of Mahavir’s life but also a reaffirmation of the values he espoused, which continue to resonate across cultures and communities in today’s world.
